We are pleased to announce the second generation Blackbird XLC!
The XLC is our longer, more featured version of our original Blackbird hammock. It has a hammock body length of 11 feet and a width of 62″.The XLC incorporates a 112″ fixed ridgeline.
Like the original version, the updated XLC is available in both single and double layer models with your choice of suspension. As of today we offer it with our popular webbing/buckle suspension, our weight saving whoopie sling suspension or if you like, with nothing but continuous loops, so that you can easily install any aftermarket suspension of your choice.
Another small change we made was to trade the plastic toggle at the end of the top canopy for the convenience of a micro carabiner. And just like before, it comes with a double-ended stuff sack, and to that we’ve added a red identifier cord at one end, making it easy to tell which end of the hammock you’re grabbing.
Like the first generation models, the new XLC has zipper running its full length on both sides of the hammock body, but the new configuration allows the hammock to be fully unzipped along it’s entire length. It also allows the user to enter or exit on whichever side of the hammock they prefer.
Just like the original model, the top portion can be fully removed and left at home when not needed. Both available tops incorporate a 7″ wide strip of fabric to elevate the canopy height above your face so that all of that hammock body width is useable, allowing you to lay right to the edge of the zipper while still having plenty of headroom.
Like the old model, the new XLC has a footbox for maximum legroom and a conveniently located storage shelf offering about 2 square feet of easily accessible, built-in interior storage space. It also comes in a standard-lay configuration, for a user to lay head left/feet right, but the updated zipper configuration on the new model allows the user to simply remove the top, flip it inside out, and re-configure the hammock as a reverse lay model, with the head right and feet left instead.
The newer zipper also allows the for the purchase of add-on accessories at a later date, this allows you to buy say, just the hammock and then you can purchase a top or other accessories in the future that will simply zip right on, allowing you to build and customize your hammock system as you go.
Like the older model, the new XLC has an available top cover. Top covers are popular in cooler weather and are used to trap a little extra heat and to cut the wind, and just like before it’s made out of breathable, wind and water resistant fabric. New updates to the top cover include a new lighter-weight fabric and 2 built in air vents, one in the peak at the foot end, and a second between the tieouts, which doubles as a window with a wide field of view. The strategic location of these vents is designed to pull outside air in down low and to move moist warm air out of the system up high, thereby minimizing or fully avoiding internal condensation in below freezing conditions. People have reported very minimal condensation even at 80% humidity with temps in the low 20’s.
Like before the XLC is compatible with 2 of our underquilt models, the 2/3-length Yeti as well as our full-length Wooki. Either of these underquilts are a great option for anyone looking to upgrade their bottom insulation FROM a sleeping pad to something more comfortable.
For those that want to add even more wind and weather protection to their hammock, the new XLC also has an available underquilt protector. An underquilt protector provides the user with full wind protection for their hammock bottom in cooler weather without them having to use a full-sized winter tarp. Ours attaches with a simple shoestring tie at both ends, but it can also be zipped directly to the top cover to create a full-on winter sock that puts you, your hammock, and all your insulation inside it’s own wind and water resistant, breathable-micro-climate.
The XLC features zipper that runs the perimeter of the hammock body, The XLC is converted into a simple Traveler-style hammock by simply removing the zippered top anytime it’s not needed.
Like the standard Blackbird, the XLC also includes a footbox which allows the user to fully use/extend the hammock fabric in the foot area without restriction from the netting, the result is maximum leg room.
The hammock can be setup on the ground as a bug bivy if needed, just be sure to use a groundcloth and pad to protect the bottom of the hammock from water and abrasion.
The Blackbird XLC comes with 2 elastic lines, one on each side of the hammock, these are used mainly to pull the netting out and away from the user, and to support the shelf, you can fully remove or leave these cords un-staked whenever it’s convenient, they are not required to use the hammock.
Note: The weight ratings listed below are based on comfort, not absolute tensile strength. So for instance the single layer is rated for a max of 250 lbs because users above that weight will experience more stretch than is ideal and so would be more comfortable in something with more support (like the Heavyweight double). The ratings can be pushed slightly but you will be trading in comfort in doing so.
